Managing Editor

The Center for Policing Equity

Los Angeles, CA

Full-Time Position

About the Center for Policing Equity

The Center for Policing Equity (CPE) conducts research that uses evidence-based, data-driven approaches to create more racially equitable policing practices.

Position Description

The Center for Policing Equity is looking for a skilled Managing Editor with a passion for social justice. The Managing Editor will be responsible for overseeing the production of written deliverables for a growing team of writers for CPE’s National Justice Database (NJD) project. The NJD is the nation’s first and largest collection of standardized police behavior (e.g., vehicle stops, pedestrian stops, use of force, complaints against officers, etc.). Leveraging data collected through the NJD, the report production team crafts compelling reports to be delivered to police departments with the ultimate goals of reducing racially burdensome policing and empowering police departments to improve relationships with the communities they serve. The Managing Editor will manage the end-to-end report production process for the NJD, ensure quality assurance of all written products and writing processes, and contribute to the development of NJD messaging and collateral.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a growing team of writers and all daily operations for NJD report production
  • Ensure quality, consistency, and accuracy of reports including proofreading and editing processes
  • Help vet candidates for the expanding writing team (in coordination with the hiring manager and Vice President of Research Interventions)
  • Iterate on report templates as the analytic plans change and stakeholder needs shift
  • Develop messaging and CPE-branded materials for stakeholders
  • Develop and enforce “voice” to ensure consistency of tone across written products
  • Contribute to CPE white papers and NJD collateral
  • Develop and implement recommendations for optimizing report writing processes
  • Serve as a public-facing expert that can speak to our NJD research products and translate report content to a diverse array of audiences

Qualifications:

  • Journalism and/or English background
  • Proven experience as a Managing Editor or relevant role
  • Background in science and/or technical writing
  • Experience translating complex concepts into language that can be interpreted by a variety of audiences
  • Superior copywriting and editing skills
  • Ability to manage the operations of a growing team
